Version history
Every document keeps its own history, so a paragraph you deleted three days ago is not gone.
What gets kept, and when
While you are writing, Docmode takes a snapshot of the document about every ten minutes. You do not ask for these and cannot lose them by forgetting: they are simply there, listed newest first, under today, yesterday and then by date.
Open the history from the top of the document. It fills the panel on the right, beside the writing rather than over it.
Keeping a moment on purpose
An automatic snapshot is a timestamp in a list, which is an archive rather than a history. When a draft matters, keep it yourself and give it a name.
- Choose Save version from the document menu.
- Give it a name if one is worth giving: the draft you sent to somebody, or the version before a rewrite. The name is optional, and keeping the moment without one is fine.
- It appears in the list with that name instead of the words Automatic snapshot, so you can find it months later.
Seeing what changed
Choosing a version shows you what was different about it, block by block, marked as Added, Edited or Removed. You are reading the difference rather than two documents side by side, which is usually the question you actually had.
The list also carries how many words the document held at each point, so you can see where it grew and where it was cut.
Going back
Choose Restore and the document becomes that version again.
How far back you can look
- Free. last 30 days.
- Pro. unlimited.
Nothing is ever deleted for falling outside that window. A snapshot older than the free plan allows you to read stays exactly where it is, and comes back into view the moment the plan changes. Plans and limits has the rest.
If your browser closes
Version history covers the last ten minutes badly by design, so there is a second net underneath it. A copy of every change is kept in your own browser as you type, and it is only cleared once the server has confirmed the save.
So if your browser crashes, your laptop dies, or you close a tab while the connection is down, the next time you open that document it asks Restore unsaved changes? and tells you how long ago they were made. You can take them back or keep the version that did save.
