Two different things

This page covers two routes in, and most people want only the first.

• Connecting an assistant lets something like Claude work with your documents while you talk to it. It needs no programming, and it is on every plan.
• The API is for writing your own software against Docmode. It is part of Pro.

Connecting an AI assistant

Settings under API holds an address to give your assistant, and a short note for each of the places this is known to work: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, ChatGPT in a browser, Cursor and Copilot, and Google Gemini's chat app.

1. Open Settings, then API, and copy the server address shown there.
2. In your assistant, add it wherever that assistant keeps its connections. The note beside the address says where that is for each one.
3. The assistant sends you to Docmode to sign in and ask your permission. You approve it there, in a page you can see, rather than by pasting a secret.
4. The assistant can now work with your documents. There is nothing else to set up.

What an assistant can do

It works with your documents the way you would: finding them, reading them, and writing to them when you ask it to. Which means you can ask it to pull up what you wrote about something last month without going and finding it yourself.

It reaches exactly what your account reaches, and nothing else. Connecting an assistant does not give it anybody else's documents, and it does not give it more than you have.

Access tokens

A token is a long string of characters that stands in for signing in, for a program that cannot sit and type a password. Settings under API makes them and lists the ones you have.

Treat a token like a password: anything holding it can reach your documents. Do not put one in a document here, in a message, or anywhere it would be published.

The API

The API is for reading and writing your documents from your own software, on Pro. Settings under API shows the exact request to make, with your address already filled in.

The examples there carry a placeholder where the token goes, written in capitals. That is the one part you replace: put the token you made in the step above in place of it, keeping the word Bearer and the space before it. Nothing else in the example changes.

Requests are limited to 240 a minute on Pro, counting assistant connections and API calls together.

Taking access back

Connected assistants are listed in settings, and so are your tokens. Either can be revoked, and it takes effect at once.

This is the thing to do if you stop using an assistant, or if a token has been anywhere you did not mean it to go. Revoking affects nothing else: your account and your documents are untouched.
