Exporting and printing

Markdown

Download MD File in the document menu gives you a Markdown file. Markdown is ordinary text with a few marks in it for bold, headings and links: it opens in any text editor and is read by almost every writing tool there is.

This is the format to use if you ever want to leave. Nothing about it is particular to Docmode.

PDF

Download PDF makes a PDF on the server and downloads it. It takes a few seconds, and the button says so while it works.

If it fails, use Print and choose Save as PDF in your browser instead. That route goes through your own computer and does not depend on ours.

Printing

Print in the document menu, or the print command in the box that Ctrl K opens, prints the document. The printed version is laid out for paper: the sidebar, the panels and the buttons are all left out, and the title runs along the top of each page.

What survives, and what does not

A PDF and a printed page look like what you see. Markdown is plain text, so some things have nowhere to go.

Kept: headings, lists, to-do lists, quotes, code blocks, tables, links, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, and highlighted passages. A highlight is written in a way Docmode reads back, so exporting and bringing it in again keeps it.

Dropped: text colour, text size, line height and underline. Markdown has no way of writing them down, and faking it would break the plain text the format exists to produce.

Getting everything out

The menu exports one document at a time. For everything at once, or on a schedule, the API reads your documents programmatically. Connecting other tools covers it.
